Dear KASD Community,
First and foremost, we hope that you and your family are doing as well as possible during this challenging time. This afternoon, April 16, 2020, Governor Evers directed the Wisconsin Department of Health Services to extend the Safer at Home order through May 26; sadly, the extension means that our school buildings will not reopen for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.
With this decision, come a number of questions and concerns for students, families and staff. Some of the questions we will be looking to answer quickly include: access to schools to retrieve personal belongings; grading; Chromebooks; graduation; and summer school. Should you have any additional questions or concerns, please submit them using this Google form; we will address submitted and other frequently-asked questions in a document to be released on our website Thursday, April 23.
Here are the answers that we do have right now:
- Per our District calendar, the last day of instruction is scheduled for June 4, 2020. We will continue to provide flexible learning options through that date for all students in grades 4K-12.
- Students in grades 5-12 should continue to engage in their online learning activities, and we encourage families with students in grades 4K-4 to remain engaged in the continued learning activities on our Flexible Learning page.
- All school buildings will remain closed. Our District Office staff will still be available via phone or email Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. If you need to speak with someone, please call (920) 759-6109 or contact us using the contact form on the website or sending an email to contactkasd@kaukaunasd.org.
- Lunch Distribution will continue for all children 18 and younger at River View Middle School from 9:00-10:00 a.m. Monday through Friday.
- All extra-curricular events are canceled through the end of the school year.
This is a very disappointing and apprehensive time for all of us. We are saddened that we will not be able to see our staff and students spreading their joy within our school buildings, but we look forward to finishing out the school year with the same strength and perseverance we have seen since we closed March 13. The work that our staff, our students and our families continue to do each day and each week is incredible, and while this change in our learning environment is not ideal, your work and continued growth is admirable.
Please know student and community safety remains our highest priority; all of the decisions in the weeks ahead will be made with that in mind. We will send follow-up communication soon on next steps and as more answers become available.
We will continue to do our very best to support our students' needs. As always, we appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through the next several weeks. We will get through this together; we will stay strong at home, and work stronger together.
Be well,
Mark Duerwaechter
Superintendent
