School Closing Guidelines

Emergency Information & Closings

The decision to close schools in severe weather is made after a review of regional weather data, and forecasts from the National Weather Service. We also talk with leaders of other local school districts and our transportation company. We make every effort to announce our decision by 6:00 a.m.

Safety of our students and staff is our greatest concern. In making decisions about cold weather closing or delays, we use a threshold of -35 degrees (F) wind chill, which is the level at which the National Weather Service may issue an advisory or warning.

Severe weather may cause any one of the following:

  • Delayed Start Time: School  begins two hours after normal start time. This usually allows time needed for streets and highways to be cleared and/or temperatures to rise.
  • School Closing: A school day is canceled due to bad weather/unsafe conditions for all or most of the day.
  • Early Release: Students are released early due to conditions that would impact transportation from school to home.

How will I know if school will be delayed or canceled on severe weather days?

If the decision is made to close schools, delay a start time or release students early due to severe weather, we notify our families in a number of ways listed below.

  • KASD's Emergency Call System ... Please be certain your contact information is correct in Infinite Campus - Parent Portal.
  • On the District Home Page and School Landing Pages of our Website
  • KASD App on your Smartphone ... Search Kaukauna Area School District in Google Play or in your App Store.
  • District Social Media Platforms
  • Television Stations: WBAY TV 2, WFRV TV 5, WLUK TV 11, and WGBA TV 26
  • Radio Stations: WHBY 1150 AM, WAPL 105.7 FM, WGEE 1360 AM, WIXX 101.1 FM, WNCY 100.3 FM, WKSZ 95.9 FM, WZOR 94.7 FM

NOTE TO OUR FAMILIES: If KASD opts not to change school schedules or close schools, parents have the right to keep their child(ren) home if they feel that it is in the child's best interest. We ask that parents call the school to inform staff of the child's absence.
