Attendance
Attendance Matters
At the Kaukauna Area School District, we believe that attendance is a cornerstone of academic success and personal growth. Every day a student is present at school provides opportunities to learn, build relationships, and develop the skills needed for lifelong success. Research shows that students who attend school regularly perform better academically, are more likely to stay on track for graduation, and develop habits that lead to long-term achievements in college, career, and beyond.
By attending school every day, students gain the consistency and support they need to thrive. Families and the school community play an essential role in promoting regular attendance, and together, we can ensure that every student reaches their full potential.
Chronic Absenteeism
Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, regardless of whether absences are excused or unexcused. This means that even as few as two absences per month can add up to significant time away from learning, putting students at risk for academic struggles and social disengagement. At KASD, reducing chronic absenteeism is one of our top priorities. Our goal is to achieve a district-wide absenteeism rate of 10% or lower, ensuring all students have the opportunity to succeed.
To combat chronic absenteeism, we focus on identifying barriers to regular attendance and providing the necessary support to overcome them. This includes addressing transportation challenges, offering counseling for social-emotional needs, and engaging families with resources and strategies to promote attendance.
If your student is struggling with attendance, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Our team is here to help with tools, resources, and personalized support to ensure your child’s success. Together, we can make every day count!
How to Report a Student Absence
- Call the school directly, or
- Submit an Absence Request through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal.
- This is used to notify the school before the absence.
If you have questions about either option, please contact your child’s school for assistance.
School Attendance Counts—Parents May Excuse Up to 10 Days Per Year
According to Wisconsin State Statute 118.15(3)(c), parents and guardians may excuse their child from school for up to 10 days per school year for reasons of their choosing, as long as the absence is communicated to the school in writing prior to or immediately following the absence. Any absences due to illness, injury, or appointments will count towards your 10 days, unless supported with a written statement from a medical provider.
Medical providers include, but are not limited to: Licensed physician, Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Dentist, Orthodontist, Chiropractor, Optometrist, Psychologist/Mental health therapist, Christian Science Practitioner, Physical/occupational/nutritional, speech therapy or behavioral therapy.
