Coronavirus Overview
< Back
With all of the information in the news about COVID-19 and its spread throughout the United States, we are seeing an increase in the number of students reporting anxious thoughts or fear about the information they are seeing and hearing. We will continue talking with students in their classrooms about the virus, and we will continue to encourage students to make healthy choices. Here are some additional ideas for talking with your young learners about the virus:
- Avoid panic. Our students are going to feed from our own behavior. As adults, we understand that there are a lot of unknowns right now, but keeping calm and reassuring our kids will help them work through their own anxiety about the situation.
- Stick to the facts. While some of the facts can be scary, learning about the virus and how it spreads can be comforting to some students, and can also promote preventive behaviors.
- Talk about the positive impacts that are coming from the current state of the world. Being prepared is important - even in times when it seems scary. Relate it to our fire drills and school safety drills - where while risk is low, it's important to be prepared just in case.
- Remind them that you will continue to do your best to keep them safe, and that their school is doing the same, and continue to talk through ways that we can prevent all types of illness - not just COVID-19.
