School Social Workers are trained mental health professionals with a degree in social work who provide services related to a person's social, emotional and life adjustment to school and/or society. School Social Workers are the link between the home, school and community in providing direct as well as indirect services to students, families and school personnel to promote and support students' academic and social success.
School social workers advocate for students and families in the following ways: develop and implement treatment plans and discharge plans that support student self-determination, advocate for student services and students’ best interests, provide case management services such as, referrals to community resources, collaboration with other professionals, provide training and workshops to teachers, school staff and parents, conduct home visits, support homeless students and students in foster care, coordinate services surrounding attendance, truancy and dropout, implement trauma-informed care, and assess students with mental health and AODA concerns.
