How will students complete assigned work on a Virtual Learning Day?
Students in grades 5-12 have been asked to take their Chromebooks home with them. Students without Internet access at home may contact Spectrum for free installation of high-speed Internet, or the district may provide wireless hotspots to these students if we can get them. The tools with which most students and teachers are already familiar are Google Classroom and Google Drive. These tools are used extensively starting in grade 1 and should be used to deliver high-quality instruction for students. Some teachers may continue to use other systems (like Moodle, SeeSaw, or Schoology) with which their students are familiar.
Students are reminded that they should only be using a school-issued device for school-related purposes, in order to comply with the Acceptable Use Policy. It should be noted that Google Docs can be used offline which will sync when students return to school.
What dates are Virtual Learning Days?
Virtual Learning Days are held on any date that would have been a normal school day, but on which students can’t meet face-to-face. Friday, May 22 will be a half instructional day. Monday, May 25 will be a full non-instructional day. Additionally, there may be some changes to instructional days for June. More information will be posted as it becomes available.
What time do assignments need to be posted on Virtual Learning Days?
Assignments should be posted by the regular start time at the teacher’s home school, which is 7:50 a.m. for River View Middle School and Kaukauna High School.
How much work should be posted? How much time is enough for students to be working?
As a general rule, the Kaukauna Area School District expectations for student time engaged in learning activities on a Virtual Learning Day are the following:
- Grades 6-12: 3 hours total
- Grade 5: 2 hours total
What is the expectation for teacher response throughout a Virtual Learning Day? When and how long should teachers be logged on and responding to students?
Teachers should treat availability in a professional manner as this is a learning and teaching day that is considered a paid day. When we expect students to engage in learning, teachers should make themselves available as appropriate to the age they teach through Google Classroom, email, etc.
All classroom instructors should communicate clearly defined processes for how students contact teachers in the event of a virtual learning day. Instructors should be available to students at the beginning and end of the virtual learning school day and will make themselves available regularly, including having posted hours of availability, via Google Classroom, e-mail, or phone.
In the case of special education students and English learners, case managers will work with students to ensure that a plan for communication is clearly articulated to students and parents to ensure accommodations are made relative to the virtual learning activities provided via Google Classroom.
The KASD Instructional Technology Department Help Desk will be available and monitored throughout the Virtual Learning Day to ensure technology needs of teachers and students are met. This includes both IT connectivity, hardware support as possible, software applications support and instructional integration support.
How do I get technical support if something goes wrong?
IT staff will be available to help students remotely from 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. on each Virtual Learning Day.
Students can send an email to studentsupport@kaukaunasd.org, which will be sent to our IT team. If students are unable to get online, they can call the helpdesk line at 920-759-6115 as a last resort. Students whose Chromebooks break during the Virtual Learning Time must contact IT for a repair or replacement.
What do we do for IEP meetings and evaluations that will be due during this time?
If your child has special education needs, his or her case manager will be in contact with you individually to discuss the plan for services during this period of extended school closure. Special education staff are working hard to do the best they can to develop creative solutions to support your child during these unprecedented times! Please continue to read your email and check Infinite Campus for updates.
How might my child’s day look?
These sample schedules provide parents and students a visual of how a student’s Virtual Learning Day might flow.
What about students who need hours for Youth Apprenticeship/Co-op or GEDO #2?
The Kaukauna Area School District has reached out to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction for how these requirements should be addressed. We are currently awaiting guidance and will share with families as soon as we have received an update.
What are the implications for state testing/assessments?
On April 15, 2020, Wisconsin Act 185 was signed into law, suspending state testing requirements for the 2019-2020 school year.
Will graduation be affected?
We are excited to announce that KHS has rescheduled graduation, and will now host the ceremony on Wednesday, July 29, 2020 at 7:00 p.m., as long as gathers are allowed by the state/federal regulations at that time. The emergency back-up date for the ceremony will be Wednesday, August 5. If we are unable to host our traditional ceremony for any reason, we will host a virtual ceremony on August 5 at 7:00 p.m.
In order to both recognize our seniors and allow for social distancing practices to continue, the ceremony will take place within the Bank of Kaukauna Stadium on the field, with seating for spectators in the bleachers. We will be limiting the number of tickets given for the ceremony to no more than 4 tickets per graduate. More information will be available online soon about access to tickets, as well as cap and gown distribution.
